1965 Formula 1 Season

Graham Hill Won Monaco Grand Prix for the Third Time

Jim Clark returned from winning the Indy 500 and promptly scored victories in both the Belgian and French F1 races.

There was a five month break between the first round of the 1965 Formula 1 World Championship and the second race in Monaco. Jim Clark dominated the Grand Prix in East London, but was not present at Monaco. He was busy on the other side of the Atlantic becoming the first non-American to win the Indianapolis 500.

Hill Records Third Monaco Grand Prix Victory

Graham Hill loved Monaco and started the 1965 Grand Prix from pole in his BRM. He looked set for victory until he was forced up an escape road at the chicane while trying to lap the ailing Brabham driven by Bob Anderson. Hill pushed his car back onto the circuit and rejoined in fifth.

Jackie Stewart led the race for a while in another BRM, before spinning down the order. Lorenzo Bandini had a turn at the front, but was eventually caught and passed by Hill. In the end hill won by more than a minute from Bandini, while Stewart finished third on the track where he’d won the Formula 3 race in 1964. John Surtees was fourth across the line, followed by Bruce McLaren and Jo Siffert. Lotus driver Paul Hawkins was fortunate to emerge unscathed after he crashed into the harbour.

Clark Returns with Belgian Grand Prix Win

Fresh from his success at Indianapolis Clark was back in the cockpit of a Lotus Formula 1 car at Spa. He had to settle for second on the grid behind Hill’s BRM but, once the race started, he quickly disappeared out front on a wet track. Hill went backwards though the field, while his team-mate improved one position from his grid slot to finish third. McLaren was third in his Cooper, Jack Brabham fourth, Hill fifth and Ritchie Ginther sixth in the Honda.

French Grand Prix Won by Clark and Lotus

Clermont-Ferrand was the venue for the French Grand Prix in 1965, and Clark was in a class of his own. After starting from pole position he pulled away from the pursuing pack at a great rate of knots. Stewart did his best to keep up in second place, but it was a futile exercise. Surtees finished on the podium, third in his Ferrari. Denny Hulme, driving for Brabham, was fourth. The final points positions were filled by Hill in fifth and Siffert sixth. Even at this early stage of the season it was difficult to see anyone challenging Clark. The Scotsman was demonstrably the best driver in the best car, and his rivals knew it.
