Despite driving an underpowered McLaren, Ayrton Senna managed to stay in contention for the Formula 1 title.

Despite his incredible victory in the European Grand Prix at Donington Park Ayrton Senna was deeply unhappy with his situation at McLaren. Before the next race in San Marino he put pressure on Ford to switch their works backing from Benetton to McLaren, as he had scored considerably more World Championship points than Michael Schumacher and Riccardo Patrese combined. He didn’t get what he wanted, but reluctantly agreed to drive at Imola.

Prost Wins San Marino Grand Prix for Williams

Alain Prost put his Williams on pole for the San Marino Grand Prix, with his team-mate Damon Hill once again joining him on the front row. Schumacher outqualified Senna to start one place ahead of the Brazilian in third.

The track was wet at the start of the race and Hill led away, followed by Senna, Prost and Schumacher. Prost managed to pass Senna on a drying track, before the leaders stopped for slicks. Hill maintained his lead after the stops, but only for a short while. In a brave move Prost passed Senna and his team-mate in a single manoeuvre. Hill eventually ran off the track and out of the race.

Michael Andretti was enjoying a promising drive, running in the top six, before spinning off. His team-mate Senna also dropped out of the Grand Prix, with hydraulic failure. Prost won by more than 30 seconds from Schumacher, with Martin Brundle’s Ligier third. JJ Lehto finished in fourth and Philippe Alliot was fifth. Fabrizio Barbazza repeated his Donington performance by finishing sixth for Minardi after starting 25th.

Spanish Formula 1 Victory for Prost

Prost and Hill were again on the front row of the grid for the Spanish Grand Prix, with the Frenchman on pole. Next up was Senna, followed by Schumacher and Patrese. Hill made a better start than Prost and led the early stages of the race. His experience team-mate eventually assumed the lead and pulled away. Hill then closed the gap again but saw his chances thwarted when his Renault V10 failed.

The Spanish Grand Prix was Prost’s second consecutive victory, while Senna finished second. Schumacher came home in third, despite a trip across a gravel trap. His Benetton team-mate Patrese was fourth, in front of Andretti. At last, the American had made it to the end of a Grand Prix, and was rewarded with two World Championship points. Gerhard Berger scored the final point in his Ferrari, which was showing little sign of being competitive.
