Three extra special F1 gifts for Grand Prix fans. A lavish book, highly detailed model cars and the chance to drive a real Formula 1 machine.
Formula 1 motor racing is known for being an extremely expensive sport. It is no surprise, therefore, that Formula 1 gifts can also be far from cheap. While there is plenty of merchandise available for modest sums of money there are also some very exclusive items available which would thrill any devoted fan. F1 Opus - Exclusive New BookOver the years the history of Formula 1 has been well documented in countless books, but none can match the sheer scale of, "The F1 Opus.” Due for publication in March 2009 by Kraken Sport and Media, pre-orders are now being taken for the enormous tome. Measuring half a square metre square and weighing in at over 30 kilograms, owners may have to invest in a new bookcase especially for it. The Opus features over 800 pages of stunning photography and text by leading motor sport writers, including David Tremayne, Richard Williams, Maurice Hamilton and Alan Henry. The book also has gatefolds which measure two metres in length when extended. One of the features of the book is a collection of Polaroid pictures depicting all living Formula 1 World Champions, and the late Phil Hill. Everything is protected inside a special presentation case. The basic version of the Opus retails for £3,000, but there is also a very special limited edition of 100 copies. It contains the signatures of every living World Champion and comes in its own carbon fibre case. The book also features a Prova Tag, which is an electronic autograph authentification device. The bad news is the price tag, with the book costing an incredible £20,000. Amalgam Models - Precision F1 GiftsAmalgam have been supplying scale models to motor racing teams since 1995 but their creations are also for sale to the public. The detail on their 1/8th scale models is extraordinary, which explains why they retail for around £2,750 each. Their range has something to appeal to everyone, from vintage Formula 1 machinery to contemporary Grand Prix machines. They also offer a model of the 2008 Ferrari Formula 1 car in huge 1/5th scale, which sells for £3,250. Even larger is their 1/4th scale Red Bull RB2, for which the price will only be disclosed upon asking. Formula 1 Driving - The Ultimate F1 GiftVarious companies offer members of the public to sample Formula 1 power, but not many provide the chance to drive on a proper Grand Prix circuit. At the Barcelona track in Spain it is possible to drive a Prost-Peugeot Formula 1 car on the actual track used for the Spanish Grand Prix. Formula 1 cars are expensive to maintain and run so the experience does not come cheap. Prices for the V8 and V10 cars range from around £2,850 to £3,850. This includes two nights in a five-star hotel, dinner, refreshments, transfers to and from the circuit and champagne after the experience. Before being allowed in the Formula 1 car participants receive comprehensive safety and driving briefings before trying a Formula Renault single-seater. Four unforgettable laps in the Prost then follow. Additional laps in the Formula 1 car can be purchased, but at around £400 a lap it’s an expensive option. Participants must be over 25 years of age, under 6’4” and weigh no more than 105 kilograms.
