06/07/08 - Lewis Hamilton won a very wet British GP. Follow the race in Silverstone lap-by-lap.
Lap 1 – Silverstone circuit is damp and the drivers start with intermediate tires. The red lights go off and Lewis Hamilton has a good start and goes side by side with pole sitter Heikki Kovalainen as they entered turn one. Kovalainen leads Mclaren 1-2; Raikkonen third. Mark Webber suffered from a poor start and dropped from second to fourth before spinning. Felipe Massa also spun. Coulthard and Vettel spun out on the gravel trap. Lap 2 – Hamilton closes the gap on Kovalainen. Towards the end of the lap, Hamilton attempts to overtake for the lead but Kovalainen defends the line. Lap 3 – Alonso has a brilliant overtaking move on Nick Heidfeld to climb to fourth place. Massa spun again and drops 23 seconds down the race leaders. Lap 4 – Lewis Hamilton overtakes Heikki Kovalainen for the lead. Alonso scored a second consecutive fastest lap. Lap 5 - Webber moves up to fifteenth with a damage limiting drive. Lap 6-8 – Webber continues his pace and climbs to 12th. Lap 9 – Raikkonen assumed second place after Kovalainen spun. Webber records fastest lap of the race. Lap 10–11 – Sutil has a big moment as he ran off the track. Webber climbes to 11th place. Lap 12-14 – Raikkonen picks up his pace but Hamilton still holds a four second lead. Webber climbs to tenth. Lap 15-17 – Massa climbs to 15th. Raikkonen records fastest lap. Lap 18 – Kovalainen comes into the pits and drops to 6th position. Lap 19-20 – Alonso enters the pits. Hamilton and Raikkonen pits on the same lap. Ferrari pit crew chose not to change Raikkonen’s tires. Hamilton maintains track position as they exit. Lap 21-23 – Routine pit stops for the other drivers. Rain pours again. Kubica enters the pits but still opts for intermediates. Lap 24-25 – Raikkonen suffers from severely worn out left front tire. The reigning champion loses seven seconds too Hamilton in just two laps. Lap 26 – Raikkonen drops to fifth as Kovalainen and Heidfeld pass. Heidfeld, however, proceeded to overtake Kovalainen as well to end up in second place as they cross the finish line. Lap 27-30 – Raikkonen drops further down the grid and is forced to pit again for fresh tires and fuel to last until the end of the race. Lap 31 – Raikkonen comes out of the pits down in 11th place. Lap 32-35- More rain pours. Kubica overtakes Kovalainen for third. Kovalainen enters the pits and drops to ninth. Lap 36 – Both Hondas scramble into the pits just as the rain pours even harder. Barrichello opts for full wet tires. Hamilton and Kubica experience off track excursions but they maintain their positions. Massa spun again. Lap 37-39 – Kubica takes the lead as Hamilton slows severely. Hamilton pits and opts for intermediates. Heidfeld comes into the pits. Kubica enters the pits afterwards and maintains track position. Lap 40 – Kubica spins out and retires for the race. Hamilton is back in the lead. Heidfeld is 39 seconds back in second place. Lap 41-42 – Barrichello is now in third place: his full wet set up is paying dividends. Lap 43-44 – Barrichello overtakes Heidfeld for second place. But the sun comes out Lap 45 – Barrichello pits again for intermediate tires. He comes out in fourth. Lap 46-48 – Trulli Enters the pits for intermediate tires. Barrichello is back in third place. Lap 49-52- Kovalainnen spins and is passed by Alonso and Raikkonen. Lap 53 – Raikkonen passes Alonso for fourth place. Lap 54-60 – It’s all Academic: Hamilton cruises to victory, Heidfeld second and Baricchello third. Hamilton Raikkonen and Massa are tied in the drivers’ standings with 48 points.
